International Standard for the implementation of Occupational Health & Safety Management System

The enterprises and organizations of all economic sectors target at the improvement of Occupational Health & Safety (OHS) conditions, through the monitoring of OHS risks according to the policy and the OHS goals they have set. The improvement of OHS conditions is done in the framework of the corresponding legislation and the increasing awareness of society regarding OSH issues.


Many enterprises and organizations carry out inspections in order to assess their performance in OSH. The inspections, by themselves, may not be able to ensure that the organization’s performance, not only complies at the present, but will continue to comply with the legislative requirements and the goals set by the organization’s OSH policy. These inspections, in order to be efficient, must be carried out in the framework of a structured management system, incorporated in the organization’s operations.

The international standard OHSAS 18001:2007 aims to provide to the organizations the components of an effective OSH management system, which can be incorporated in the organizations’ operations and help in the achievement of the OSH goals set. OHSAS 18001:2007 can be applied to all organizations’ types and sizes and integrate different geographic, cultural and social conditions. The international standard’s approach framework is shown in the above figure. The system’s success is based on the commitment by all organization’s levels, and most importantly by the top management. The systems allows to the organization to:

  • Develop OSH policy
  • Set goals and processes in order to achieve the commitments arising from the OSH policy
  • Take action in order to improve its OSH performance
  • Prove compliance with OHSAS 18001:2007 requirements

OHSAS 18001:2007 general goal is the support and promotion of OHS good practices, including self-regulation, in balance with the socioeconomic needs.

The advantages derived from the implementation of an effective OHS management system, according to the requirements of the international standard OHSAS 18001:2007 are shown in the figure below.
